Lyric Benson Fergusson is a spiritual teacher and activist who pushes the envelope of how God is traditionally spoken of. Her mission is to spread the message of peace, love, and Divine-realization in the transformational poetry book, French Kissing God: A Journey to Enlightenment.
Lyric grew up in Hollywood as daughter of actor/director Robby Benson and singer songwriter Karla DeVito. She spent most of her young life on television sets such as Ellen and Friends. Before her twenty first birthday Lyric experienced several life changing events: She was a student at NYU during the attacks of September 11th where her godmother passed away in one of the towers, then while studying at Maharishi University of Management in 2004 a dear friend was murdered in front of her in the college dining hall. These circumstances along with a number of personal and family health challenges spurred her to diligently seek freedom from suffering and pursue God within.
At twenty two Lyric became a celibate monk and remained so until she was almost thirty. She devoted her life to silence and awakening, often spending eight to ten hours a day in eyes closed meditation or prayer. It was during these transformational years that she composed her poetic mysticism.
In 2011 Lyric took a brief respite from solo monastic living to create her spiritual rock and roll album Lyric’s Love Light Revolution co-written by her father Robby Benson. The goal of the album was to give listeners a taste of what consciousness and meditation can be like—in a very unconventional way! All lyrics from the songs were directly inspired by her poetry.
Lyric is also an enthusiastic screenwriter, actress, photographer. She is an avid practitioner of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s Transcendental Meditation, and she graduated Magna Cum Laude from Maharishi University of Management with a degree in Vedic Science.
Lyric now lives in Maui, Hawaii with her husband and is looking forward to more adventures that life has to offer.
Interview with ChicagoPride.com
“If someone is kind and loving, it’s none of my business what gender they associate with. I grew up with two amazing gay men who I considered my uncles. I watch God move through them. I watch God move through a transvestite and a straight woman equally. The Divine takes all forms, while remaining infinitely formless. That’s what the poem “God is All Genders” is about: God is He, She, It, and No-thing simultaneously. Infinity is beyond gender. We are this infinity.” -Lyric Benson Fergusson

That is the invitation that ushers the reader into this tempting tidbit of a book called French Kissing God: A Journey to Enlightenment. Filled to overflowing with delicious love poems to God in the spirit of Sufi poet Rumi, it plays the heartstrings and scintillates the soul. Like her inspiration whose words echo forward from 13th century Turkey, Fergusson’s poetry is multi-layered and are both prayer and seduction. Read full article ->
